A separatory funnel, also known as a separating funnel, is a laboratory glassware used in liquid-liquid separations to isolate (partition) the components of a composition into two immiscible solvent with different phase densities. Typically, one phase will be aqueous, while the other will be a lipophilic organic solvent such as ether, dichloromethane, or the like. All of these solvents generate a distinct barrier between the two liquids. The more dense liquid lowers and may be drained away from the less dense liquid, which stays in the separatory funnel, normally the aqueous phase unless the organic phase is halogenated.
