Hydra is a watery genus of tiny organisms. They are native to the tropical and temperate regions and are well-known for their capacity to regenerate. Hydra has a tubular, radially symmetric body that is long when stretched and is held together by a simple adhesive foot called the basal disc. A mouth opening at the free end of the body is encircled by one to twelve thin, movable tentacles with highly specialised stinging cells called cnidocytes. Nematocysts are specialised structures found in cnidocytes. Hydra has two primary body layers, causing it to be "diploblastic." Mesoglea, a gel-like material, separates the strata.
