Yeasts are eukaryotes, single-celled microbes that belong to the kingdom fungi. They are believed to account for 1% of all identified fungal species. Yeasts are unicellular creatures that originated from multicellular predecessors, with certain species capable of developing multicellular traits through the formation of strings of linked budding cells known as pseudohyphae or false hyphae. Yeast diameters vary widely based on species and habitat, but they are generally 3–4 m in diameter. The majority of yeasts reproduce asexually by mitosis, and many of them do so through the asymmetric division process known as budding.
