Spirogyra is a genus of filamentous green algae called for the helical or spiral structure of its chloroplasts. Spirogyra is typically found in freshwater settings, and there are over 400 species worldwide. Spirogyra ranges in breadth from 10 to 100 m and can grow to be many centimetres long. It is frequently seen as green sticky and slimy patches on the ground near ditches and other pools of stagnant water.
