A neuron, also known as a nerve cell, is a type of electrically excitable cell that communicates with other cells through specialised connections known as synapses. It is the primary component of nerve tissue in the majority of mammals. A neuron is made up of three parts: a cell body (soma or neurocyton), dendrites, and a single axon. Normally, the soma is compact. The filaments that protrude from it are known as axons and dendrites. Dendrites generally branch widely and extend several hundred micrometres from the soma. The axon leaves the soma at a swelling known as the axon hillock and can travel up to 1 metre in humans and more in other species. Axon terminals are located at the distal point of the axon's branches, where the neuron may send a signal throughout the synapse to another cell. Neurons may be devoid of dendrites or have no axon.
