The cardiac muscle, often known as the myocardium, is one of three forms of vertebrate muscular tissue. The primary tissue of the heart's wall is made up of involuntary, striated muscle. It is made up of individual cardiac muscle cells connected by intercalated discs and surrounded by collagen fibres and other extracellular matrix elements. Cardiac muscle contracts similarly to skeletal muscle, but with some significant distinctions. A cardiac action potential is a type of electrical stimulation.
