A vein's structure, which consists of three primary layers. The outer layer is made up of connective tissue known as tunica adventitia or tunica externa. The tunica media is an intermediate layer of smooth muscle. The tunica intima is the inner layer lined by endothelial cells. The intermediary layers in the vein are substantially thinner and less developed. Aside from the pulmonary and umbilical veins and arteries, arteries transport oxygenated blood from the heart, whereas veins return it.
