The heart is a complicated muscle that pumps blood via the circulatory system's three divisions. There are three of them: coronary, pulmonary, and systemic. Coronary circulation receives blood straight from the major artery (aorta) leading from the heart. The heart must pump blood to the lungs or the rest of the body for pulmonary and systemic circulation, respectively. Because of the distance blood must travel in the pulmonary and systemic circuits, the heart muscle is asymmetrical. Because the right side of the heart is responsible for sending blood to the pulmonary circuit, it is smaller than the left side, which is responsible for sending blood to the entire body via the systemic circuit.
