How to design Composite Lab Furniture & Equipment for Schools

Loading

What is a Composite Skill Lab?

The composite laboratory combines elements of all three cornerstones of science, namely Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, in one single lab. It’s mainly used in schools till the 10th standard. These labs align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). Composite Skill Labs, as mandated by the CBSE curricula, aim to equip students with modern, 21st-century knowledge that not only fosters holistic development but also enhances various aspects, including academic, intellectual, character, and cognitive growth.

Why are Composite Skill Labs necessary?

According to CBSE by-laws, for a school to receive or maintain affiliation with the CBSE Board, it must have a Composite Skill Lab to facilitate experiments for the Secondary Section. Furthermore, the board has identified a set of subjects more aligned with real-world skill requirements, and these labs will support the training and skill development of students in these subjects.

4 simple steps to set up a composite lab

Room Assignment

According to CBSE by-laws, the minimum size of the Composite Lab should be 600 square feet; therefore, choose the room accordingly. A room of this size can accommodate 30 students. However, if the class strength exceeds 30, you will need a larger room. Additionally, choose a room with good ventilation.

Lab Design

Designing the lab is a crucial step. Therefore, please keep the following points in mind while creating the design:

  1. Prepare the layout of the room accurately. The positioning of doors, windows, pillars should be clearly mentioned.
  2. Decide the number of students conducting experiments in a session.
  3. Select a combination of Workstations like Wet lab Workbench for Chemistry & Biology lab and Dry lab Workbench for Physics lab.
  4. Select Island or Wall-facing type Lab furniture Workbench as per requirement
  5. Make sure to choose the base material (MDF/CRCA) of the Lab tables (Workbench) keeping in my mind, strength, longevity, and budget.
  6. Benchtop material (MDF/Granite) of the Lab tables (Workbench) to be selected keeping in my mind, strength, longevity, and budget. 18mm thick granite or 25mm thick MDF worktop is advisable.
  7. There should be enough number of base cabinets/overhead cabinets/ full height cabinets to store the lab materials.
  8. One demonstration table/teacher’s table to be placed.
  9. Laying of water and gas pipeline in the lab to be designed as required.

Installation of Composite Lab Furniture

Installing the lab tables (workbench) and auxiliary items according to the design is essential.

  1. When laying the water pipeline (inlet and outlet), it is essential to ensure that it follows the design; additionally, pay careful attention to the position of the lab sinks. Moreover, specify the material of the pipe.
  2. Laying the gas pipeline (inlet and outlet) should be done according to the design, while also considering the position of the cylinder station and Bunsen burner points. Additionally, the material of the pipe should be specified.
  3. Installation of lab furniture to be done as per the design.

Installation of Composite Lab Equipment

According to the CBSE curriculum, the school must carry out a set of experiments for the Secondary sections. Please keep in mind the points given below while procuring the lab equipment for the Composite Lab of a school.

  1. The Composite Lab Package must cover all the experiments as per CBSE by-laws.
  2. Include demonstration lab models and educational charts to enhance understanding of the topics. Additionally, these resources can significantly aid in the learning process.
  3. There should be sufficient lab consumables, such as lab glassware and lab chemicals, included in the Composite Lab Package. In addition, these materials are essential for effective lab operations.
  4. Demand a warranty on the lab products; furthermore, request technical assistance, including demonstration and installation of the supplied lab equipment.
